Nyota Ndogo – Kenyas lille stjerne

Er en charmerende afropop sangerinde fra Kenya, der optræder med sin arabiske Taarab-influerede afropopmusik.

Ndogo er fra kystbyen Mombasa. Hun har udgivet 4 albums. Hun vandt Kisama Award for bedste Taarab sanger i 2003 og bedste kvindelige artist i 2005. Hendes sang Watu na Viatu var nomineret til bedste Østafrika sang i 2007. I 2013 blev hun Best coast Female Artist.

Hendes sang “Take Care” er med på detinternationale World 2003 compilation album. samtidigt med at samme år var hendes sang “Chereko” med på cd’en “Rough Guide to the Music of Kenya”.

Hun samarbejder tit med de unge rap-musikere som er ret populære i Kenya, og som hun har lavet flere hits med. Især sangen Nibebe er blevet et stort hit.

Endeligt var hun også i 2013 dommer i det største TV-show i østafrika “Tusker project Fame”

Taarab er en populær musikstil i Kenya og Tanzania og høres især ude på kysten. En musikstil som oprindeligt kommer fra Egypten.

I Europa optræder hun med sit 6 personers store band !

Nyota Ndogo  – Kenya’s little star – is a musician from Kenya who performs taarab-influenced pop music.

Ndogo is from the coastal city of Mombasa. She was a school drop-out who worked as a house maid. Her father Abdala Atib was a musician with a local band, but Nyota Ndogo did not take up musical career until being inspired by the hip hop group K-South‘s lyrics. She was discovered by Andrew Burchell, a Mombasa-based producer.

Nyota Ndogo has released four albums: CherekoNimetoka Mbali Mpenzi and “Mama Wakambo”, She won Kisima Award for best Taarab singer in 2003 and Best female singer in 2005. She has three nominations for the upcoming 2008 Kisima Awards. She was nominated for the Best Kenyan female artiste at the 2007 PAM Awards. Her song Watu na Viatu was nominated for the best East African song at the 2007 Tanzania Music Awards.

Her song “Take Care” is featured on the international World 2003 compilation album, while “Chereko” is on the Rough Guide to the Music of Kenya compilation, the same track was also featured on the Rough Guides – Off the Beaten Track compilation.
